The Ones You've Got to Win.
Been a while no?
Lots on my end, but I will start my foray back into the community with the first MTT I have played in about a week. I just have to get this off my chest because I woke up this morning and the wound is just as painful as last night. I am still on tilt. I checked and since I only post once a month, I am officially exempt from prohibitions on Tales From the Darkside. And on contemplation I don't think of this as a bad beat, just a lesson in the tincup sorrows of deep runs unfulfilled. Edit: Rav makes the good point I was mathematically behind post-flop so "bad-beat" is not even in play, but my point is just that this was a pivotal race [close enough] and on the way to a win this is where the rubber takes its wear.
50/50. 1000k+ runners. Down to 35. I am 11th; was as high as 6th but made a big laydown with JJ to a supertights minre-reraise [the hand I exited both the 19k and the FTOPS final tables on -AA>JJ both times - I am convinced FT thinks it's is my signature exit hand]. Look great, wide awake in America and feeling no pain at 2AM. My stack is 70k. UTG 3xs for 7200, CO smooth calls and I find AKd at the end of the circle. I can understand the reraise here, but after mulling I decide to call along and see if I secure the high ground before engaging. Flop runs JQK with two clubs. UTG has been a classic late game donkey, the kind you wonder how in the fuck did they get that stack and hold it this long. Range is wide open. My concern is the able LAG in the CO. My decision is made easier when UTG open-raises for 60% the pot and CO folds. Yes 9T is possible, AT less likely, and KJ and KQ are definitely a go, but this guy has not indicated the kind of style that would bet the set. Likeliest to me is he is betting his draw. I don't think I ever lay this down this late. I have been exceedingly patient for 4 hours, I think this is it. I jam.
T7c. OESD and flush draw. Fourteen outs twice, no? Any A (3 - I have one obv), Any 9 (4), any club (7 - already counted Ac and 9c). And I just cant dodge the shrapnel. A win there and I am at T162k and the chipleader with 34 left. This seems like where and when you want to get your stack in. I've written about this before: I am willing to gamble for a shot at the win now. Your thoughts as always welcome.
For those of you who play a lot of these and know how fucking mindnumbing it is to get this far to come with nothing (215 bucks or something like that) - you'll understand when I say I still want to put my face through this screen. Fuck. At one MTT a week (there's just no way around this reality, I am insanely busy in the EP lab, and we are moving into to the new place this week) it may be months before I get a chance like this again.
Yeesh.
Why do I play this game again?

sucks when u get into that spot and come up with pretty much zilch profit...wasn't he a favorite on that flop though?
Didn't know you were playing last night. I limped and stumbled into the money and went out in 151st last night. Whee! I was knocked back down to my starting stack after losing a huge coinflip with JJ (Of course) with 250 or so left.
As far as the hand goes, and by no means take what I have to say as the right way to play, I personally would have jammed preflop, or at least put in a reraise. AK soooted is a nice hand to have, but I don't know how much I want to go into a three-way pot with it. In the end it's just an Ace-high hand, so against two other people you're most likely going to need to improve to take down the pot.
I dunno, I guess considering there is around 20k in the pot preflop, you have a hand that's much better HU than it is three-handed, I just think I'd rather push with it. But that's how I play.
Rav: This is why blogging is good for my game. My whole take on this post was slightly off. You know your math. I was 49 to 50.5 or something. I put this up on little sleep and still on Results Tilt.
In fact, I went to sleep not realizing his rationale for calling given the T opened up a lot more outs...it's actually the classic "who's ahead debate" smokkee and waffles once tore it up over. I had the made hand and jammed with it, he called off his entire 50k stack (some 20+BBs) for the chance to be chipleader. Can't fault him since thats just what I was up to too.
Mike...believe me I jam there too. But with 70k I just thought the pair was likely to call and race which I really didn't need to do there. Why not take a cheap flop and try to get them to bite from behind? That rationale may have been flawed, but I am also sick of 33 calling that shove and not improving. Like you said though, that was a nice pot and a shove looks great in retrospect. Having taken this flop I really stuck myself. But I was right; he was drawing...just much much bigger than I thought - even after the fact.
Next time...[aka Oct 2009]
I believe it's the perfect situation for a squeeze reraise to something like 20K. If you already believed UTG is weak, he would have to fold (Can't think he's as weak as to call a reraise with T7c), and I just don't see how someone with an obvious middle pair is going to shove on you after the reraise. If he does, I would race for sure...
In any case it sucks so much to get deep in a tourney and lose on a coin flip that would have left you right in the top and with a chance to the big bucks. It's definitely the most frustrating part of the MTTs
I believe a real man would lay that down to tons of action on the flop. Yes it's TPTK but the flop is also easily in two-pair or straight land. Just something to think about. And notice I'm not saying that I lay this hand down here. Just that a real man would give it serious thought.
yeah doc, i have to agree with Hoy, I've lost a ton of money on hands like these, they just feel like they desrve a jam, but no one is calling without being in a race or way ahead, King-Queen, King-Jack, Ace 10 are all donkey hands that are solid donkey gold at the end of these things.
Hey, sklanski says ace king needs to be played all in pre-flop, and as much as I hate to say he is right, it is the only way i ever have had success with that fucking rag piece of shit look good for busting on T.V. hand.
gl on EP boards you donkey...

The dealer asks all players at a time, how many cards they want to replace. Players who want one, two or three cards, get them right away, but if someone wants to replace four first get three, after all, still one. If the person who opened the game wants to replace one of the opening card, you must show the card to get rid and say, "opener away" (after opening).

And do not manage to get color, but the ball hit him ie does not improve, so the checks. C was able to get the color, so he adds another twenty. D risk paid off and he is now in possession of full house, so decided to go for twenty, and increase the rate by a further twenty

Now that would have put the forty to stay in the game, he decides to retire, due to their weak hand. Back to A, it adds the required forty feeling obliged, although not too happy with the market situation, B retreats, and C adds another twenty of those thrown in by him before, but it raises.

Now all those who want to stay in the game must throw in the forty, and players who remain in the game (A, C, D) reveal the card. D with Fulla takes the pot, which in this case is quite high.
